The first book in The Marianne Trilogy, to be followed by Comrades and The Marianne Secret.

The Marianne Summer

Dan is a genial young man drifting along getting by on odd jobs. His friend Geoff runs a letting agency and enlists Dan to do some decoration on a flat. If Geoff hadn't given him an old film magazine, he'd never have called the East End Film Festival and he'd never have met Alex. But he did call, and because he did, everything changed forever.

A crisis occurs when Alex disappears. With Angela's help, Dan goes to Spain looking for her. They travel to France and visit the Vercors Massif, the site of the uprising, where they find out what really happened in the village of Marianne-en-Vercors at the end of 1944, and together, they unravel the mystery of the pendant.

The Marianne Summer is a contemporary adventure romance with a parallel story about the British women of the Special Operations Executive and the French Resistance. It's the story of the sacrifices they made, sacrifices they had no choice but to make.

Alex is a film student earning extra money helping out at the film festival before going home to Spain. While helping Dan with the flat they meet Angela, the flat's owner and a veteran of the Special Operations Executive in occupied France in 1944. She is troubled by dreams and memories of her time in the war and the loss of two close friends. She feels guilty because they both died and she was the one to survive.

Angela is captivated by Alex, who reminds her of her friend Luca, a wireless operator killed during the 1944 Vercors uprising. They go shopping for a birthday present for Angela's daughter and Alex finds an antique pendant in the local market. Angela buys it because it looks like one Luca used to wear.
